PhD Scholarships in Ubiquitous Computing Closing Date: 23 February 2004

Three to four fully funded scholarships are available within the Computing Department at Lancaster University for PhD research in ubiquitous computing. Ubiquitous computing is a future-oriented research field that presents exciting and stimulating challenges for researchers with interests in diverse areas of computer science. Lancaster is planning to significantly expand ubiquitous computing research and training in coming years.

The ubiquitous computing and embedded interactive systems group at Lancaster University is internationally recognized and maintains close links to other leading institutions world-wide. It focuses on experimental research in the following areas:
- computing systems and environments
- user interface technologies (physical, tangible, embedded interaction)
- positioning and location technologies
- context sensing and activity recognition

We seek candidates with an ability to contribute to the high profile of the group, and an interest in developing their research as part of ongoing project activities (http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/eis/). We expect candidates to have an excellent first degree (BSc or equiv.), an advanced degree (MSc or equiv.), or equivalent experience in Computer Science.

Prospective applicants are asked to contact Dr.Gerd Kortuem
(kortuem at comp.lancs.ac.uk) or Prof. Hans Gellersen
(hwg at comp.lancs.ac.uk) by 23 February 2004 with a letter outlining their research interest. A formal application for PhD admission is not required at this initial stage. Informal enquiries are welcome.

The scholarships provide a tax free living allowance and tuition fees, and will be available to successful candidates for starting dates between 1 April and 1 October 2004. At least two of the scholarships are open to non-UK/EU residents.
