Job Description
Human Factors Engineer
Role
Human Factors Engineer will provide leadership in conducting task analysis and usability assessments. They will work closely with clients, business teams and the development team to play a lead role in user interface design.
Additionally, they will conduct heuristics evaluations and recommend design improvements, as well as present usability results and recommend design solutions.
Responsibilities:
· Conduct focus groups and other research to identify, understand, and prioritize user needs and workflows · Lead exploratory and remote testing efforts (card sorts, labeling, content
prioritization)
· Develop usability checklists to support alternative heuristic evaluation methods · Conduct informal usability assessment using paper prototypes · Assess usability of functional prototypes · Provide inputs to client Style Guide · Design usability tests, conduct them, and analyze the results and present actionable recommendations with an appropriate balance between business needs and usability ideals.
· Report key findings and recommendations from research for the best possible user experience in formal and informal meetings · Develop, prioritize, and promote design recommendations based on usability principles, testing, research, external research, best practices, and other data · Recruit and screen usability test participants and maintain contact database
Requirements
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate with both business and technical audiences.
· Strong interviewing, facilitation and presentation skills · Proven ability to plan and conduct usability tests, cognitive walkthroughs, heuristic evaluations, task and needs analysis and other usability methodologies involving web-based applications and web sites · Strong knowledge of usability and design techniques including formal usability lab facilitation, qualitative user research methodologies, heuristic evaluation, paper prototyping, comparative testing, focus groups, design session facilitation, task analysis, conceptual design, and competitive analysis.
· Strong ability to translate results into easily understood and actionable results and recommendations.
· Passion for creating excellent user experience and for improving the tools, techniques, and methodologies applied in the usability field · Ability to handle multiple projects for multiple clients at once · Ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment · Experience working for a federal government agency
Education and Certifications
· A BA/BS college degree with at least 3-5 years of Usability or Human Factors experience or equivalent (at least two to three years of web usability experience). Ph.D. in Human Factors Engineering or related field is a plus · Certified Human Factors Professional (CHFP), Certified Usability Analyst
(CUA) or equivalent certification (preferred)
Logistics
· This position will reside both on site at the client facility in the Rosslyn, Virginia and/or DC area and in our Laurel, Maryland offices.
