PhD studentships available in HCI at Sheffield Project Supervisor(s): Prof Steve Whittaker Application Deadline: May 17th.

Two PhD studentships are available to work with me at Sheffield. Candidates should have strong background background in either computer science, cognitive psychology or design. In addition to supplying the usual CV information, please include in your application the names of 3 referees along with a one page summary of your main areas of research interest, and a short proposal of a topic you would like to research. You might want to look at my webpage before doing this:
http://dagda.shef.ac.uk/is/people/stafpage/whittake/index.html Please do not restrict your proposals to the topics below, if you have strong interests in a related area then specify these.

Possible research topics:

- Personal information management - how do people organise their work, photos, music, communications and information? When do they need this information and how do they access and find it? How can we design systems that will allow them to retrieve this personal information effectively? How do people manage tasks? What artifacts do they use and how could we design interfaces to better support task management?

- Social communication and communities - how do people use technologies like instant messaging, texting, email and mobile phones to keep in touch and coordinate with others? How can we better support different types of social communication? How does location and place affect these types of communication? How can we promote the sharing of communication and information in communities?

- Extracting information from meetings - What types of information do people want from meetings, what information do they forget, and how can we design interfaces that allow people to effectively access meeting records?

If you need more information please dont hesitate to get in touch
