Job Title: Information Scientist - Taxonomy
Location: Abbott Laboratories, Lake County, Illinois Full time
As part of Library Information Resources, the incumbent will analyze and develop plans, vision and strategy for creation and leveraging of descriptive, administrative, and structural metadata in support of the functional requirements of an expanding enterprise-level taxonomy program, focusing on enhanced information retrieval from external and internal Web sites and internal data repositories. Composes data dictionaries and input standards, and consults on database design issues. Makes recommendations regarding integration of thesauri into broader information architectures (e.g. how to leverage thesauri to enhance searching and browsing functionality). Takes a leadership role in the advocacy and development of a corporate taxonomy system. Works with LIR and interdepartmental project teams to improve access to information resources. Provides outreach to other departments on the subject of the utility and implementation of controlled vocabularies ! and metadata as a means of enhancing discovery and retrieval of information. Provides indexing training to staff. Works with LIR and other departments in planning for mapping of metadata supplied with, or available for, both internal and external collections, to establish vocabulary compatibility or convertibility, enhancements, and integration of metadata needed to support, search, and display data on internal systems.
Aids in the evaluation and selection of appropriate software and other information technologies relevant to metadata, controlled vocabulary, and other information access projects.
