UI Designer, Validus

May 16 04

Source: Interaction Design List

A User Interface Designer at Validus develops the underlying concepts and detailed user interface elements behind our multimodal, handheld medical products designed for physicians.

As a UI Designer at Validus, you will:

+ interact daily with content and speech UI designers,
the engineering team, and staff physicians;

+ conduct some formal, but mostly guerilla user research;

+ work with the product team to map your findings into
detailed design specs for the interaction design, application
flow, screen layouts, GUI elements, etc.;

+ create and fully develop GUI designs requiring your careful
attention to detail, user advocacy, teamwork, and a
thorough grasp of the product's "big picture" vision;

+ be a quick study -- rapidly coming up to speed on, refining,
and then building upon our existing body of research and
design work -- always applying a careful balance of creativity
and practicality.

NECESSARY SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

+ Experience with and a passion for user-centered design
applied across a full product lifecycle.

+ In depth experience with GUI designs for the handheld PDA.

+ Ability to understand and extract users' mental models by
working with our staff physicians, then to translate into
design goals and, ultimately, a superior user experience.

+ Usability assessment skills and instincts.

+ Excellent communication, teamwork, and user advocacy skills.

+ Ability to debate, develop, and document complex interaction
concepts.

+ Ability to convincingly articulate your own and others' ideas.

+ Fluent in written and spoken English.

Preferably, you also have direct experience with:

+ PocketPC / WinCE GUI design
+ development of clinical applications
+ web application design
+ conducting user research and usability studies
