Design and Usability Manager - The Microsoft Windows Server System (WSS) User Experience team is looking for an experienced group manager to lead the design and usability organization. This individual will be responsible for delivering increased customer value across Microsoft’s BPI, Exchange and SQL Servers, through the delivery of brand-building user experiences, and in conjunction with the broader strategy of the WSS User Experience (UX) organization. The WSS Design and Usability group works in parallel with the WSS User Assistance and Global Engineering groups to support the product teams building Microsoft’s SQL, Exchange and BPI Servers. This group has grown over the last year, and is actively delivering design and usability coverage for existing product as well as providing user experience design leadership, and vision work for future product releases. The continued growth and development of this group is an important factor in creating customer value through the delivery of world-class user experiences.

The WSS Design and Usability team manager will lead a team setting research and design directions, and will serve as an advocate for user experience work across product teams. The successful candidate will be expected to establish business value across Microsoft’s user experience community and help lead the user experience domain forward. They will work with WSS User Experience leadership in establishing new directions for design and usability in improving customer productivity and satisfaction, and will help position the group in strengthening design leadership and vision to the product teams. In addition to product design and formative user research responsibilities, the group will lead baseline studies and set user productivity targets, assist in mapping content and training to user tasks, and identify and reduce user pain points. The successful candidate will monitor the business plans and needs of each Server product, ensuring that the group continues to set and meet each product’s priority needs, and will be a strategic leader in building a world-class product infrastructure for critical customer segments for Microsoft. Success will be measured by overall improvements in the quality of WSS software, content, and online solutions.
Individuals interested in pursuing this position should have a Master’s degree in a behavioral science or design discipline or a related discipline and substantial experience in managing large teams. Strong presentation and communication skills are a must, as are seasoned problem-solving and cross-group negotiating skills. Candidates should have hands-on experience implementing quality processes in a complex, global organization and have demonstrated experience with online and content processes, book publishing, User Assistance/User Interface integration, and usability issues. They should have 10-12 years of experience in a high-technology environment, a familiarity with server technologies and the associated customer documentation and user experience needs, as well as knowledge of cutting edge Microsoft partners.
