The PostDoc position will participate in the Smart Surroundings project and will work closely with project staff at TU Delft, Industrial Design. The work will be closely coordinated with current research in the ID Studio lab.

The candidate should hold the equivalent of a PhD degree in industrial design, interaction design or product design from an established school or hold a degree from a design-related field such as experimental psychology or ergonomics. Publications and design-related studies will be considered in the selection process. The candidate should have excellent communication and leadership skills. A strong interest in pursuing fundamental and design driven research on the relationship between individual user variables, context, and multimodal interaction design is desirable. The candidate will help guide the PhD candidate who will be working in the area of interaction design for well-being.

The Smart Surroundings research program will investigate paradigms for bringing the flexibility of information technology to bear in aspects of every day life.
It foresees that people will be surrounded by deeply embedded and flexibly networked systems that provide easily accessible yet unobtrusive support for an
open-ended range of activities, to enrich daily life, enhance personal well-being and to increase productivity at work. This presents a paradigm shift from personal computing to ubiquitous computing, challenging the research community to investigate new building blocks and integrated infrastructures, as well as emerging applications and interaction styles. Smart Surroundings will be quite different from current computer systems, as they will be based on an unbounded set of hardware artifacts and software entities, embedded in everyday objects or realized as new types of devices. Such products will need to be adaptive and geared towards individuals, requiring extensive knowledge about human experiences, skills and preferences.
The faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft, will focus mainly on human-product interaction, user experiences and experiential testing. Knowledge areas of partners in the research consortium include embedded systems, computer architecture, wireless communication, distributed computing, data and knowledge modeling, application platforms, as well as application research in different settings and sectors.
