The company’s Online Education Group, which began operations in 2001, has
experienced unprecedented growth to quickly become the second largest
provider of online education in the world. The group operates two online
platforms, American InterContinental University Online (AIU Online) and
Colorado Technical University Online (CTU Online), offering accelerated
associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in business,
information technology, visual communications and education. As of
April 31, 2004, online student population was more than 15,000 full-time

The Usability Engineer is involved in the design, implementation, and
evaluation of computer interfaces that are accessible and easy for people
to use. The Usability Engineer reports to the Software Engineering Manager
and is a member of the engineering team.
Development:
Help build and maintain a usability infrastructure that will drive
usability engineering throughout CEC OEG schools
Works with the quality assurance and web development teams to ensure
highly online user experiences
Designs and evaluates visual human interfaces utilizing user-centered
design principles
Maintains a standard style guide of human interfaces for use by web
developers
Develop and maintain a set of accessibility standards for use in all
online applications
Testing and Analysis:
Conducts usability tests and analysis throughout the software development
lifecycle
Collects user data through usability methods
Interview customers, conduct heuristic evaluations, run usability tests,
analyze usability data and present findings.
Monitors user feedback and satisfaction
Conducts accessibility tests during the stabilizing phase of the software
development lifecycle
Research and Development:
Participates in Research and Development projects managed by Senior
Software Engineer
Researches advances in the field of usability and UI design
Initiates and conducts internal Research and Development projects
Conduct competitive product analysis from a usability perspective
Contributes to CEC OEG User Interface Design Standard
Internal Training:
Trains web development team members in user-centered design techniques
Experience and Skills:
Master's Degree in Human Factors Engineering, Human Computer Interaction,
Cognitive Psychology, Experimental Psychology, or Educational Psychology
Minimum of two years experience as a usability/human factors engineer in
the web develop-ment arena
Minimum two years experience with online design, information design, and
interactive de-sign, including a solid understanding of and experience
with the web and web technologies.
Possess a working knowledge of HTML, Adobe PhotoShop, Macromedia Flash,
Microsoft Visio, and Microsoft Project
Experience in information architecture and wireframing
Proven user interaction design skills and usability testing and evaluation
experience.
A strong understanding of GUI design concepts, elements, theories and
emerging technolo-gies is necessary
Working knowledge of user profiling, task analysis, scenario development,
user interface design, and usability evaluation methods
Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
Must be organized, independent, and self-directed
