Job Description
As the Web Editor, you are the hard-nosed but smoothly diplomatic gatekeeper of quality for our customer web site. In the job interview, the successful candidate will blow us away with superb web writing and editing samples (marketing copy or other extended prose) and IA samples (sitemaps, wireframes and interaction/process diagrams), a cogent retelling of complex and successful web information architecture projects (with URLs) she/he has completed, and a "can do" attitude. A portfolio of stunning layouts and illustrations would be a definite plus, but keep in mind that this job is 40% IA, 40% editing and writing, and 20% design and related management tasks. As part of a geographically distributed Corporate Marketing team, you will:
* Review all web content at multiple stages of development for conformance to standards for information architecture, editorial style, and visual design.
* Be prepared to do light copyediting for style of material from our professional writing staff, substantial restructuring and editing of material submitted by other internal stakeholders, and constant "microreviews" of headlines, captions, menu labels, etc. that need IA-savvy and insightfully concise wording.
* Familiarity with writing for Search Engine Optimization is also a definite plus.
* Manage web content projects, working with internal stakeholders in geographically distributed offices to transform their goals and raw materials into a well architected, concisely written, and attractively designed set of web pages.
* Conduct whiteboarding sessions with web producers to advise them on information architecture, navigation and visual design issues for their projects.
* Work with design consultants to define needs and manage delivery of design deliverables.
* Be constantly vigilant in assuring existing standards remain at the forefront of all content development projects, and be always on the look out for opportunities to add value, particularly in the realm of usability, navigation, interactivity, and sheer eye-opening impact.
* Continually review web content for freshness and appropriateness, and edit content as appropriate or work with internal stakeholders to coordinate updates.
* Review functional projects for usability and interaction design. Participate in defining usability testing for projects: goals, methodology, prototypes, etc.
* Drive the further development and proselytizing of information architecture, content, editorial style, and visual design guidelines, infusing all coworkers with a sense of enthusiasm for and commitment to quality.
Required Skills
* Three to five years of professional writing experience. A portfolio of web writing samples is a must, and prior technical marketing writing or technical writing experience is a definite plus.
* Two to three years professional experience as a web information architect – experience with business software or other high-tech web sites strongly preferred. Must have a portfolio of site map and wireframe examples.
* Superb writing and editing skills, with a firm grasp of grammar and editorial style guidelines. Ability to edit quickly and to edit at an appropriate level of detail given project milestones.
* Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to be diplomatically persuasive in a collaborative, team atmosphere.
* Ability to prioritize and develop multiple projects with overlapping milestones. Strong personal drive for quality.
* Excellent organizational skills and methodical attention to detail.
* Demonstrated ability to step up and own projects from concept to final deployment, working with multiple stakeholders and content producers.
* Solid experience with site mapping and other IA tools such as Visio or Illustrator, project management tools such as MS Project, and visual prototyping tools such as Photoshop.
* Although this is not a production or development position, you should have a firm understanding (and direct experience is a definite plus) of the following: HTML and CSS coding, ASP/.Net server-side scripting technologies, XML/XSL, database-driven applications.
