PhD Studentship, Napier University

Aug 03 04

Source: BCS-HCI

School of Computing and School of Design and Media Arts, Napier University, Edinburgh.

PhD Studentship

A fully funded three-year PhD studentship is available between the School of Computing and The School of Design and Media Arts. The research will aim to study the design process as exhibited in professional design practice with a view to identifying how computer-based support might aid the early stages of design. The research will have two main elements (1) field studies of professional design practice and (2) the development and evaluation of proof of principle prototypes of computer-based support. The successful applicant will work closely with academics from both Computing and Design.

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours, or Masters, degree in either Computer Science or Design. An empathy with other disciplines such as anthropology, psychology or sociology, for example, will be seen as an advantage.

The studentship provides a standard living allowance (of £9,000 pa in 2003-04) and also covers full fees up to a level appropriate to UK/EU applicants, for up to three years subject to satisfactory progress. The studentship is expected to start on 1 October 2004.

Details of the School of Computing can be found at: www.soc.napier.ac.uk and the School of Design and Media Arts at: . More general details can be found on the website of the University Research Office: www.napier.ac.uk/depts/research/research_office.html. An application form can be found on the School of Computing site by following the link "Information for: Research Students".

Applicants are strongly advised to include as much detail as they can about their research interests on additional sheets, including any ideas they have about the method of studying design practice within the workplace.

Formal application should be sent to the address on the form: The Research Office, Napier University, Merchiston Campus, 10 Colinton Road, Edinburgh, EH10 5DJ.

Informal enquiries can be made by e-mail to either Paul Rodgers, p.rodgers@napier.ac.uk or Michael Smyth, m.smyth@napier.ac.uk

Deadline: Friday August 20 August 2004.
