PhD studentships available in HCI/CSCW at Sheffield
Supervisor: Prof Steve Whittaker
Application Deadline: Oct 28th, 2004

I have a PhD studentship to work with me in Sheffield, in the Information Studies Department (a 6* rated department in the last Research Assessment exercise). I am looking for someone with a strong background in either computer science, cognitive psychology or design. In addition to supplying the usual CV information, please include in your application the names of 2/3 referees along with a one or two paragraph proposal of a topic you would like to research. You might want to look at my webpage before doing this: http://dis.shef.ac.uk/stevewhittaker/index.html Please do not restrict your proposals to the topics below, if you have strong interests in another area then specify this.

Possible research topics:

- Personal information management - how do people organise their stuff, ie their work, photos, music, communications and information? When do they need this information and how do they access and find it? How can we design novel interfaces that will allow them to retrieve this personal information? How do people manage everyday tasks? What artifacts do they use and how could we design interfaces to better support task management?

- Social communication and communities - how do people use technologies like instant messaging, texting, email and mobile phones to keep in touch and coordinate with others? How can we better support different types of social communication? How does location and place affect these types of communication? How can we promote the sharing of communication and information in communities?

- Extracting information from everyday conversations - What types of information do people want from everyday conversations, what information do they forget, and how can we design interfaces that allow people to effectively access these records?

The studentship is open to all European citizens, tuition fees are paid and a stipend is available.

If you need more information please don't hesitate to get in touch
