UI Design Mgr
PayPal is looking for a design manager who will be responsible for managing a team of interaction designers for PayPal's large scale web-based application. The ideal candidate is a visionary who will proactively champion design to other groups within the company, understands design's role within the business, and can achieve the business goals while creating a world class design and user experience. Must have previous experience leading a team of designers.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Managing the day-to-day operations of your group, including setting priorities, assigning resources, and ensuring goals are achieved.
- Mentoring designers and helping them to set and achieve fulfilling career paths.
- Overseeing many simultaneous projects and strategies from inception to launch. Reviewing designs and plans to ensure high quality, ensuring your team applies user-centered design principles and site design guidelines.
- Identifying and implementing process improvements that improve efficiency and effectiveness.
- Contributing to a culture of innovation and teamwork with measurable positive results.
- Writing performance reviews and determining compensation.
- Recruiting and hiring UI Designers to join your group.
- Representing PayPal in the broader design community through conferences talks, papers, networking, etc.
Qualifications:
- The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of interface design experience, with an additional 2+ years of design team management.
- Preferred educational background should include a BA/BS or MA/MS in Human Computer Interaction or an MFA in Design.
- Familiarity with the following technologies required: HTML, CSS, XML, CGI, ASP, JSP (or other similar scripting languages).
- Knowledge of following tools required: Photoshop, Illustrator, Homesite, CVS.
- Managing design teams that have worked on large scale localization projects is strongly preferred

User Research Mgr
PayPal is looking for a User Research manager who will be responsible for building and managing this new team of usability engineers for PayPal's large scale web-based application. The ideal candidate is a visionary who will proactively champion user research/usability evaluation to other groups within the company, understands the user research/usability role within the business, and can achieve the business goals while creating a world class user experience.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Helping prioritize user research/usability projects.
- Building infrastructure for this group, such as vendor relationships, participant database, usability issue database, benchmarking, etc.
- Defining processes for feeding user needs into the initial product development stages.
- Determining which usability methods/techniques yield the most effective data in a compressed development cycle.
- Planning, designing, and conducting usability evaluations such as usability tests, heuristic evaluations, field studies and competitive analyses during all phases of product development.
- Working with marketing and product groups to identify user segments and create user profiles.
- Planning, designing, and conducting usability testing in the lab and in the field; both domestically and internationally.
- Analyzing data, writing reports, and presenting findings to cross functional teams.
- Evaluating and communicating results of studies and working with designers to come up with design solutions that not only solve the usability issues, but also adhere to site standards and meet the business need
Qualifications:
- At least 8 years of industry experience conducting usability research.
- Must have previous experience developing international and domestic user research strategies.
- Must have previous experience developing processes for integrating user research into the product development life cycle.
- Experience in usability testing of web-based applications and conducting usability test internationally is strongly preferred.
- Advanced degree in Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Human Computer Interaction or Human Factors, or other related discipline with a solid foundation in research design using quantitative and qualitative methods.

Usability Engineer
PayPal is looking for usability engineers with expertise in usability evaluation techniques and user research/ethnographic research techniques. Usability engineers are responsible for evaluating existing/prototype designs and for conducting field research that will help inform the company about user needs as well as help shape new features.
