Job Title: PhD Studentship in Human Computer Interaction (HCI)

Description:
Applications are invited for a SER (State Secretariat for Education and Research) funded PhD studentship at TIK (Computer Engineering and Networks Laboratory) of ETH Zürich, Switzerland. The candidate will primarily be responsible to conduct a research project in the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Specifically, the project aims to tackle various issues in usability science, including substantiating the underlying theoretical groundwork, developing formal and informal approaches to tracking the effectiveness of usability evaluation, and augmenting existing usability tools to meet emerging user and system requirements. The candidate will also work as a Scientific Secretary for an international project (COST Action 294), in which leading researchers in the field of usability evaluation are involved.
Education:
The successful candidate holds a Diploma (or M.Sc.) acceptable for matriculation at the ETH Zürich and has a strong background in Cognitive Psychology and Statistics. Working knowledge in Computer Science is desirable. In addition, the following skills and abilities are deemed essential: Fluent spoken and written English; Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; Ability to work independently, collaboratively and flexibly; High motivation for and commitment to academic research.
Entrance upon: May 2005 or later by agreement
Duration of Appointment: Probation period of 3 months, to be extended yearly till March 2009
Remarks: Financial support is in accordance with the scale of the Swiss National Science (SNF) Foundation. Additional income for the administrative tasks will be awarded by the aforementioned international project.
