Xerox Research Centre Europe (XRCE) in Grenoble has a vacancy for a researcher to join its Work Practice Technology Group. The group is a multi-disciplinary team made up of social scientists, computer scientists and engineers. Its focus is on informing the innovative design of technology through a detailed understanding of the ways in which people carry out their daily activities. One part of the group's activities is therefore in-depth, often long-term ethnographic field studies to gain knowledge of the ways in which people work.
Ethnomethodological analysis of these studies is used to uncover how the work is organised. This analysis is then used to develop insights into opportunities for members of the group to design and engineer new technologies as well as to identify how current technologies may be used more effectively.
The successful candidate will be a researcher with relevant experience of having worked in this kind of multi-disciplinary environment and with a demonstrable sensitivity to relating a deep understanding of how people work to technology design.
Applications and CVs to be sent to peter.tolmie@xrce.xerox.com no later than Friday 25th March 2005.
