The Information Architect:
Identifies opportunities for content sharing and reuse to§ enhance information value and reduce the cost of information ownership
§ Provides thought leadership in the definition and provision of content
§ Clarifies and captures business terminology to ensure relevancy
Position Description: Primary Functional Objectives
The primary objectives of the Information Architect will be to:
• Develop and maintain an effective information architecture
• Design and develop content process flows
• Develop and maintain content taxonomy
Example deliverables realized through the attainment of these objectives include: Site maps, wire frames, workflow diagrams, taxonomy and navigation structures
Position Description: Key Functional Tasks
The “Information Architect” role will manage overall execution for the following activities:
• Definition of internal & external education standards and guidelines for content structure, quality and usability
• Development of nomenclature schemes for standardizing naming conventions
• Development of taxonomy and controlled vocabulary
• Development of user experience concept activities, including the development of use cases, user scenarios and content requirements
• Lead user research, concept testing , and usability testing
• Distill communications strategy and content requirements into taxonomy for validation
• Inventory scope and complexity of content and target audiences and work with technical team to design presentation, layout, taxonomy, and navigation of content
• Participate in development of content model and metadata with technical team
• Use appropriate presentation methods to clearly communicate key aspects of the design and its rationale to stakeholders
• Document the design's behavioral aspects using use case model and use cases
• Specify the complete conditional presentation of the user interface
• Balance a consistent big picture view with appropriate attention to detail; create artifacts with the necessary details
• Collaborate with cross-functional team on implementation feasibility to ensure that Interaction Design is realizable
• Design and document (as page schematics/wireframe templates) the persistent and reusable interaction elements
• Create information architectures whose hierarchies, groupings, and juxtapositions clearly present the information and support the relative importance of customer activities
• Design effective structures and flows grounded in consistent, extensible conceptual models that mirror customers' mental models
• Design unambiguous and easy-to-understand instructional text, labels, calls to action, and other signage
• Ensure that designs and their underlying conceptual models are informed by a deep understanding of existing and planned content, functions, transactions, and relevant business rules
• Utilize best practices for expressing Interaction Designs visually
• Demonstrate an understanding of cognitive psychology and human factors best practices
• Assess existing content and functionality for relevance to core customer experience and identify needs for new/revised content or functionality
• Manage the creation or revision of high quality editorial content
• Collaborate with cross-functional team to ensure that content strategy aligns with platform and repository capabilities
• Develop plans for creating and maintaining content, including workflow, governance models, publishing models, staffing models, and editorial calendars
• Create inventories of existing content and functionality that inform content/functional strategies
Position Description: Requirements
The “Information Architect” role must meet the following requirements for hire:
• 3-5 years of experience working in a “Information Architect” capacity for a global firm; 5-10 years experience developing content management systems, tools and work flows;
• Experience within the Financial or Insurance industries for information architecture and taxonomy
• Experience developing content for multiple channels including web, email, and print
• Experience developing content requirements and use cases for applications
• Strong business sense, excellent organizational and logical skills and detail orientation
• A demonstrated ability to work well in highly collaborative, cross-functional teams
• Excellent oral, written and visual communication skills
• Knowledge of at least three content management applications, examples include: Interwoven, Vignette, Documentum, Stellent, Percussion, IBM
• Ability to travel
