User Services Intern

JSTOR (www.jstor.org), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping the scholarly community take full advantage of advances in information technology, seeks energetic and dynamic students to fill the position of User Services Intern.
JSTOR provides access to an electronic archive of important scholarly journals across a variety of academic disciplines and has offices located in New York and Michigan. JSTOR is a small, distributed, and growing entrepreneurial enterprise that values teamwork and a collegial spirit.
The JSTOR User Services unit is serving a rapidly expanding national and international user community of academic institutions and individuals through a wide range of activities, such as initiating access for new participants, providing direct user support, and carrying out interface development. Additionally, JSTOR is working with an affiliate non-profit organization, Portico, on the design, development and operation of an electronic content delivery system. This position will involve work on both JSTOR and Portico projects.
Duties and Responsibilities
This internship will include, but is not limited to, the following projects and duties:

Interface Development:
• Work closely with Interface Specialists and project managers to improve the design and functionality of the public JSTOR web site and on other projects. Tasks will include:
o Creation of mockups – HTML, wire frames, paper prototypes, etc.
o Carrying out usability studies – heuristic evaluation, testing, etc.
o Writing use cases.
o Conducting research to help direct the project.
o Describe system and interface requirements and work with developers to implement designs.
• Create documentation appropriate for communicating the findings and outcomes of the abovementioned tasks.
• Participate in Interface Group meetings and mockup review sessions.
• Assist with maintenance of informational pages on the public JSTOR site.
• Participate in the ongoing development of the staff intranet.

Quality Assurance:
• Employ both manual and automated testing methodologies.
• Identify and clearly document errors and inconsistencies in the functionality, usability, and performance of the software.
• Perform regression testing.
• Create, perform and maintain both manual and automated test scripts.
• Identify issues and work with developers to resolve them.
• Assist with verification of new journal content as it becomes ready for release. Work with appropriate members of the Data Release Team to resolve issues.
Required Qualifications
• High to superior technical aptitude.
• Ability to easily adapt to changing computer environments, demonstrated proficiency with a wide range of computer platforms, Internet tools, and presentation and design software.
• Proficiency with HTML and HTML editing tools, such as Dreamweaver.
• Familiarity with cascading style sheets (CSS), web standards, and web accessibility.
• Familiarity with such tools and technologies as: basic UNIX, FTP, MS Office, • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
• The ability to communicate with other team members, work independently, and work well on multiple tasks under competing deadlines.
• Detail-oriented.
Desired Qualifications
• Familiarity with web design and usability principles.
• Familiarity with such tools and technologies as: Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Visio, content management systems, XML.
• Experience in library or academic environment and familiarity with the use of on-line scholarly resources.
