User Experience / Usability Engineer

As a User Experience / Usability Engineer, you will help to make our technical wizardry seem simple to our users. You have strong opinions about user interface design, which you can support with facts (or at least good arguments). You value simple design and efficient user interactions, are willing to challenge developers' claims regarding "what users want" and will help with managing user testing.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct usability research and translate findings into product improvements
  • Incorporate customer and market feedback into future product requirements
  • Conduct, and participate in, concept generation activities, including the development of user profiles, user scenarios, organizational models, task models, prototypes, and feature lists
  • Successfully communicate conceptual ideas, detailed design, and design rationale, both verbally and visually
  • Identify changes in scope or functionality as they arise
  • Work with development teams to ensure that the technical development adheres to the user requirements
  • Work closely with the QA team to create functional test plans

    Experience and skills:

  • A minimum of 5+ years of web application/browser-based application user interface
  • Experience in design/development: planning, execution, and testing, including experience with ad-hoc & formal usability testing.
  • Understanding of product management practices, such as competitive market research, customers needs analysis, and business case definition for emerging software products
  • Passion for design and things that look great and work well
  • Demonstrated ability to generate unique and balanced design ideas
  • Able to advocate directly and effectively for emphasis on usability and make constructive suggestions for change; must be able to back this up with data and/or case studies
  • Familiarity with the software development life cycle and ability to insert user experience improvements without increasing timelines
  • Solid understanding of dhtml (html, css, javascript): both the W3C specs and browser support/vagaries.
  • Solid academic background in human-computer interaction or related field; strong technical background a major plus
  • Can work independently, and effectively prioritize time between multiple projects
  • Desire to have experience with localization issues
  • Some travel will be required as part of performing field usability studies Sophos is a world leading specialist developer of anti-virus and anti-spam software.
