JOB DESCRIPTION:
Yahoo! is looking for a Senior Design Manager with strong relationship and management skills to join the Network Products User Experience Design group.
You will be responsible for delivery of the design of the Yahoo!
Front page, My Yahoo! and the Yahoo! Front door strategy. You will work with lead designers to define the experience strategy, conceptual models, interaction, and visual design of the products. In this position you are expected to foster and support a collaborative, innovative culture, working closely with product, marketing and technology managers. You will also be responsible for coordinating the schedule and deliverables of the design and user research team.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Gain trust and credibility with product managers so that they
consult and get input *before* making design decisions.
* Work with product managers to define project goals and stabilize
requirements / remove extraneous variables.
* Anticipate and take action to avoid having the design team work on
pointless projects - while convincing the product team to dedicate
resources where they are needed.
* Provide timelines and estimates for UED work, then manage mutliple
projects and resources to hit those dates while updating expectations
and schedule.
* Develop, evaluate, iterate and manage high quality detailed UI
specifications and visual designs for complex projects, including use
cases, flow diagrams, wireframes and final documentation
* Justify/expain/rationalize/support designs with product.
* Attend status meetings.
* Proactively communicate status and updates to relevant stakeholders
throughout design process
* Engage in hallway conversations and after-meeting discussions with
product managers to influence product direction.
* Interview new product candidates to assess their suitability.
* Communicate UED organizational decisions to product.
* Flag researcher opportunities and involve UER as much as possible.
* Identify resoure needs and make case for contractor heads or agency
budget requests.
* Incorporate UED guidelines, business requirements and corporate
goals into design solutions
* Work with usability researchers to design test plans and prototypes
and to iterate designs throughout user testing
* Work with visual designers to improve and refine visual design and
consistency
* Understand each designer’s interests and capabilities.
* Align project work with designer’s interest.
* Analyze research, business requirements and technical possibilities
and devise product experience strategy.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* At least 8 years experience in interaction design, visual design or
related area
* Prior experience as a key member of a UI team contributing to
product development cycles of successful web site launches and
software application products
* Ability to solve complex issues as well as supply technically
viable design alternatives
* Capacity to review the work of interaction designers and provide
guidance
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Able to collaborate with others in a cross-functional team and
foster a positive collaborative environment
* Methodical, detail oriented, efficient, organized, self-starter,
highly productive
* Able to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment and meet
deadlines
