Manager of User Interface Design
JSTOR (www.jstor.org), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping the scholarly community take full advantage of advances in information technology, seeks an energetic and dynamic person as Manager of Interface Development.
The Manager, User Interface Design will lead an energetic and dynamic group of 4-6 interface specialists and assistants. The main responsibility of the position is to support, coach, and mentor the group in all aspects of their work. The group is responsible for various areas of interface development including, but not limited to: creating wire frames and HTML mockups, conducting usability testing, information architecture, content development and maintenance, and writing use cases and functional requirements. The Manager will also ensure that the needs of JSTORs wide range of users (librarians, end-users, and publishers) are considered throughout all interface development.
Responsibilities & Duties
Assist and support staff with their projects. Help to coordinate cross-project collaboration. Introduce staff to new techniques and interface development methods.
Ensure that a consistent vision and approach is applied to all JSTOR projects both in developing new interfaces and in enhancing existing ones.
Ensure that the JSTOR website adheres to web standards, including web accessibility.
Participate in projects in the role of project lead, interface designer, or both.
Assign work and projects to appropriate staff, based on skills and availability.
With others, prioritize and schedule work for development and release.
Work very closely with developers to ensure successful implementation of new interface design and functionality.
Research and investigate new options and features for JSTOR to incorporate into the interface.
Assist staff with creation of use cases and formal requirements for technology projects and work closely with the Project Manager to ensure timely delivery of the projects.
Coordinate weekly update meetings and other staff improvement activities for the interface group.
Work with staff to define and complete objectives on a monthly basis; work with Associate Director to help set annual interface development goals.
Attend conferences, professional meetings, and represent JSTOR in external forums as appropriate.
Required Experience and Skills
Proficient with developing HTML and CSS according to web standards and web accessibility guidelines (W3C-WAI, Section 508).
Degree in Human Factors, HCI, Library Science, Industrial Design, or related area.
At least three years experience as a key member of a user interface team.
Experience managing/supervising at least one person.
Experience managing projects and/or leading teams.
Superior technical aptitude.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong analytical and leadership skills.
Organized, able to act independently, and able to switch rapidly between different projects in a fast-paced environment.
Solid understanding of information architecture and interaction design principles.
Ability to collaborate effectively and actively as part of multi- disciplinary teams.
Proven ability to effectively manage time and priorities.
Desired Experiences and Skills
Experience working in libraries or developing library web resources.
Mastery of UCD principles and solid interaction design skills.
Ability to develop new approaches to complex design problems.
Awareness and understanding of latest user interface and information architecture trends.
Track record of designing interfaces and writing detailed UI/functional specifications.
Ability to create/produce interfaces that remain consistent across all popular browsers.
Ability to distill complex business needs into functional requirements, wireframes and HTML mockups, and usability requirements.
Familiarity with web content management systems.
The ideal candidate will have experience in one or more of the following
areas:
Web design or AI for a high-traffic, publicly available web site.
Management of web design/development team.
Analysis of web sites for compliance with web standards, accessibility guidelines, and usability.
