Position Title: Senior Interaction Design Consultant/Usability Specialist

Status: Contract ~ Full Time

General Description:
Limina Application Office, LLC is a small user interface research and design consultancy based in Washington DC. Limina is looking for an individual with excellent information architecture, user research, and problem solving skills who can help meet the needs of our existing client base in the California Bay Area. Limina is currently concentrating on working with firms specializing in scientific instrumentation and bioinformatics helping to drive consistency, usability, and information-design-driven market differentiation across diverse and integrated lines of software products.

Position Summary:
This individual must be an expert in creatively applying user-centered design practices to develop effective interactive experiences for complex desktop applications/software interfaces. Web based experience not necessary, but a plus.

Specific Responsibilities:
- The GUI specialist will be working with Limina’s clients, leading design solutions for the development of: Interaction models, Workflows, Wire frames, Storyboards, UI specifications and Interactive prototypes.
- Translate system, business and user requirements into a cohesive interaction model focusing on the users tasks and objectives.
- Conduct workshops to gather requirements and assist product management in authoring functional user requirements documents for the interfaces.
- Work closely with Limina team mates as well as client product managers, program managers, software engineers and quality engineers to develop their designs.
- Work effectively with remote team members in multiple time zones.
- Some travel required (depending on location).

Necessary Knowledge and Skills:
- Deep expertise in user behavior and experience design techniques to help drive the user-centered design process.
- Expertise and experience with a variety of user research and usability testing approaches (including usability tests, surveys, site visits, interviews, and focus groups).
- Ability to provide leadership in concept development.
- Experience writing proposals.
- Thorough knowledge of the Windows operating systems and MS Office is required (knowledge of the Mac OS is a plus).
- Experience developing new client relationships, ability to maintain positive and profitable client relationships.
- Ability to balance great design with meeting short deadlines.
- Must have a natural interest in technology with the ability to grasp and distill highly complex issues.
- Able to produce results independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment, demonstrating both self-motivation, good communication and strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Must be willing to take the initiative to ramp and develop an awareness and point of view on industry developments and market needs.
- Working knowledge of prototyping tools.
- Experience working with biotechnology research and instrumentation software is a plus.

Education:
- Bachelors degree in Human Factors Engineering, Human Computer Interaction, Cognitive Psychology, Information Science or related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience designing software interfaces.

Salary: Time and Materials Based, at a rate TBD.

Candidates should be prepared to present a body of work that strongly demonstrates user-centered design approaches.
