Following is a job posting for a Principal Scientist position at Medtronic, Inc. The position is full-time and would be located in Minneapolis, MN.

PURPOSE:
The volume of medical information is rapidly increasing. High-tech implantable medical devices (e.g., defibrillators, pacemakers, and monitors) are capable of continuously monitoring complex physiologic conditions of patients. In addition, electronic medical records can store volumes of data. Clinicians (physicians, nurses,…) want to use this information to extend and improve patient’s quality of life.
A creative individual will have the opportunity to design novel user interaction concepts to enhance the clinician’s ability to diagnose and treat patient’s diseases. These concepts need to transform and synthesize the volumes of medical data into simple, clinically actionable information to help clinicians manage the patient’s diseases. These concepts may utilize advanced technologies (e.g., wireless) and a variety of user modalities (e.g., auditory, tactile,…). This individual will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the clinical environment and interact with leading physicians, nurses, and patients.
RESPONSIBILITES:
1. Research and develop clinically oriented solutions to complex informatics usability problems that require ingenuity and creativity. Strong analytical and creative skills are needed to brainstorm and develop concepts/visualizations. The designs may include specific displays (e.g., computer user interfaces, web sites, printed reports,...) and new system or interaction designs.
2. Lead informatics efforts by applying human factors principles and techniques to the discovery, definition, design, and evaluation of new products/displays/interactions. These principles include an understanding of human performance and limitations (perceptual, cognitive,…) and human factors techniques such as customer needs identification, knowledge acquisition, user/workplace profiles, task analysis, scenario development, user interface design, and designing and conducting usability tests.
3. To learn about the clinical aspects of disease management and the implantable device system which includes the implanted device, external communicators, and software/internet based medical information systems.
4. To collaborate closely with world renown physicians, scientists, and business partners to arrive at the optimal SYSTEM solution for enhancing the clinician’s experience in managing patient’s diseases.
REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM:
1. Masters in Human Factors, Cognitive/experimental Psychology, Industrial or Biomedical Engineering with extensive human factors focus.
2. 3 - 5 years of experience working on human factors designs for medical, business, or consumer products.
3. Excellent interpersonal, team, presentation, and written skills
4. Demonstrated proficiency in analysis and concept generation / creative design.
5. Ability to work at various levels of a problem, from the high-level concepts to the clinical, device, or algorithm details.
6. Aptitude to learn complex implantable device system and clinical aspects of disease management.
PREFERRED:
1. Ph.D. Human Factors, Cognitive/experimental Psychology, Industrial or Biomedical Engineering with extensive human factors focus.
2. 7 – 10 years of experience working on human factors design for medical, business, or consumer products.
3. Experience with expert systems and human-machine task allocations.
4. Experience with medical decision-making.
5. Working knowledge of basic physiology, especially cardiovascular system.
6. Experience in designing web sites.
