Yahoo! Inc. is looking for an Interaction Designer/Design Manager to join the Platform Design group within the User Experience & Design (UED) team. In this position you are expected to foster and support a collaborative, innovative culture, working closely with visual designers, user experience researchers, and technologists across all the various UED teams to define the user experience standards strategy. The ID in Platform will be responsible for owning the developing Pattern Library, for facilitation of dialogue across business units and for regular communications and announcements about the growing body of standards.
The Platform Design group is responsible for identifying and upholding Yahoo! Design and Brand Standards, through the creation and application of design patterns, standards, best practices and guidelines. This opportunity will include the stewardship of the pattern library as well as leading the design other cross-network frameworks and initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own the facilitation and coordination of the UED Pattern library
- Create and be accountable for the user interaction model, workflows, information architecture, schematics, prototypes and interface guidelines for cross network components and frameworks
- Facilitate creation of patterns and specs from other design teams, help integrate into library and propagate solutions to all other design teams
- Facilitate communications across business unit UED leadership about new standards proposals
- Set conceptual design and product directions based on field research and functional requirements including an understanding of cross-product issues and challenges
- Work with user experience researchers to design and observe usability studies and translates the findings into design improvements
- Collaborate with visual designers to refine the interactive experience and retain a user focus
- Work hand in hand with web developers and engineers to deliver the final product
- Manage project communication and asset exchange across multidisciplinary team throughout all phases of projects
- Manage a team of designers (primarily interaction but might also include visual designers).
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Human Factors, HCI, cognitive science, graphic design or related field
- At least 5+ years experience as a key member of user experience team participating in the complete product development lifecycle of several successfully launched web and/or software applications
- 1-3 years managing design staff
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Mastery of user-centered design process and solid interaction design skills
- Familiarity with field and lab-based usability research methodologies
- Familiarity with web technologies and strong technical leadership
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Ability to communicate design rationale and build consensus
- Ability to prioritize and manage work to critical project timelines in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to develop new approaches to complex design problems
- Must be organized, have an eye for detail and be able to put ideas into a tangible form
- Must be process driven, demonstrate strong interaction design skills and have a solid understanding of user centered design principles and design patterns
- Able to develop new approaches to complex design problems and can convey ideas into tangible form
- Be an avid practitioner of consistency, minimalism and have a keen design sensitivity
- Must communicate clearly and effectively to varying audiences; have strong analytical skills; have excellent interpersonal skills; able to collaborate actively with others in a cross-functional team with the ability to build consensus
- Ability to create prototypes at a variety of levels of fidelity
- Organized and able to act independently
- Works well under pressure and able to meet aggressive deadlines
- Must have solid understanding of web application and website design with working knowledge of HTML
- Familiarity with the Windows and Macintosh Human Interface Guidelines a plus
- Passion for and understanding of design patterns and standards
