Position Description
Overview: Business Process Renovation at SAP
The Business Process Renovation team (BPR) is a global innovation group at SAP Labs. We focus on creating user delight through designing and implementing solutions that meet and exceed real user needs and wants. BPR reports to Henning Kagermann, CEO of SAP, and our projects are sponsored by SAP’s Executive Board. SAP is the world's largest inter-enterprise software company and the world's third-largest independent software supplier overall. SAP employs more than 32,000 people in more than 50 countries and is the recognized leader in providing collaborative business solutions for all types of industries and for every major market.
BPR is currently looking for a user experience design intern (flexible start date, duration min. 3 months, max. 6 months, located in Palo Alto (CA)). We need a candidate who relishes solving tough design challenges, and who is passionate about creating innovative product experiences. Our team offers the place to stretch skills in new directions and an opportunity to leverage design to fundamentally change people's lives around the world.
One focus of this Design internship will be Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS deliver unique value to business system users in displaying various levels of data related to geographic locations, for example in analyzing trade areas, market opportunities, vehicle routing, or risk management. GIS functions have been embedded into SAP for many years. The Business Process Renovation group is looking into expanding the use of GIS at SAP to enable new user groups make business decisions related to geography. Special interest or prior experience in this area is highly welcome.
Design Intern Responsibilities
Main responsibilities include the following:
v Conduct end-user research to explore, uncover, and analyze real user requirements (and capture them in user requirements specifications)
v Promote the synthesis of end-user design research into effective visual communication pieces (communicated through user experience specifications).
v Engage collaboratively and flexibly with team members in prototype scenario development and flow charting of the user experience
v Play an active role in all aspects of the design process including identification of user needs, ideation, and exploration of design solutions, prototyping, and iterative end user validation.
Ideal Candidate Profile
v Proven track record of out-of-the-box, innovative thinking and design
v Well developed skills in flow charting user experience, data visualization, typography/layout (wire framing), sketching (story boarding, scenarios, rough layouts, mock-ups), and user interaction design (icons, interface elements) are critical
v Proven track record of success with interactive media prototyping tools (e.g. Flash, Director, Lingo, PhotoShop, Indesign) and design and production skills for web-based projects and printed communication pieces are required
v Passion for end-user focused software applications design and development with an appreciation and empathy for the entire software design process
v Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively engage and convey ideas to cross-functional technical and non-technical teams
v Perspectives on current visual design trends, their impact on software design and end user interaction, and their implications for the design and development of enterprise software
v Degree in one of the following preferred: Visual Design, Graphics Design, Interaction Design, Interface Design, Product Design, Human Factors Engineering, Industrial Design, or related programs.
v 1-3 years professional work experience in visual end user focused design and/or relevant postgraduate education is a plus.
v All candidates must have current student status (or must have graduated within the last 6 months).
